Banana is a very useful and nutritious fruit. So is the green banana or Plantain, which is cooked rather than eaten raw. In Bengal there is nothing of the banana plant that is not eaten or used in some ways. From its flowers to its trunk which is used as a raft or food for cattle. Plantain is very rich in Vitamin A & C among other things. It’s not a bad idea to make it part of the daily diet or weekly vegetable mix. This is a very simple dish which complements rice and a tadka dal very well. Another of my growing up dishes, which I could make myself and loved.

Ingredients

  • Plantain: 2 pieces
  • Potato: one large
  • Onion: 1 medium size chopped
  • Green chili: 1 chopped
  • Coriander leaves: 2 tbsp chopped
  • Mustard oil: 2 tsp (or to taste)
  • Salt: to taste

Method

Pressure cook the plantains and the potato whole. 2 whistle and simmer for 5 minutes. If you cut and pressure cook, the color of the potato will change. Therefor, if you are cooking together anything with plantain, which I do at times along with rice, you have to cook whole unless you want a tint in your rice or potato. Peel, and break roughly. Put them in a large mixing bowl, put all the ingredients and mash and mix well with a fork or hand. Add the mustard oil a little at time depending on your taste. Serve with rice and dal.
