Pumpking Mash or Mishtikumra’r bhorta, it’s a Bengali dish.

Bengalis can just about mash anything with mustard oil, green chilli and onion and mix it with rice and eat as a delicacy. This is a very simple dish and can be made in minutes.

Utensil/ Appliance

A small saucepan


  • Pumpkin: 1 cup chopped in equal size
  • Water: 1/4 cup
  • Onion: 1 small finely chopped
  • Green chilli: 1 finely chopped
  • Sugar: 1/2 tsp
  • Mustard oil: 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves: 1 tbsp coriander leaves chopped


 Boil the pumpkin with the water in a small saucepan for 5-8 min till done. Dry out the water if excess water is left. Alternatively you can bake it and mash it. Take it out, mash it with the back of a spoon or wooden ladle. Mix in all the ingredients and garnish with coriander leaf and serve with steamed rice. As simple as that.
